Bubble app builder review, the no-code veteran under scrutiny

A Bubble app builder review that tests the veteran on four things: what its depth has earned it, how workload units bill, how locked in your app is, and whether the native mobile builder holds up. Prices checked on bubble.io in October 2026.

Bubble app builder review, the no-code veteran under scrutiny

Bubble is still the deepest no-code tool you can buy, which is the short verdict of this Bubble app builder review. You design pages visually, define your own database and wire logic with workflows, and Bubble hosts the result on the web and, now, as native mobile apps. It earns that reputation. The two prices you pay are time, because it takes weeks to get fluent, and portability, because Bubble does not export your app as source code. Billing by workload units adds a third thing to plan around.

Bubble has been around since 2012, longer than almost every AI app builder it now competes with, so the useful question is not whether it works. It is whether its old strengths still outweigh its old costs. Prices and limits below come from bubble.io/pricing and Bubble's help center, checked Oct 2026.

What a decade of depth has earned

Most chat-based builders produce something impressive in ten minutes and then fight you on the fortieth change. Bubble is the reverse. Nothing appears by itself at first, but every part is something you defined: data types such as Users, Listings and Bookings, privacy rules that decide who can read each field, and workflows like "when Pay is clicked, create a Booking, charge the card and email the host". That makes marketplaces, multi-role SaaS tools and approval flows realistic without code.

  • Logic you can inspect. Workflows and conditions are visible in the editor, so a bug has a place to look.
  • Built-in database, hosting, server logs and an API connector to almost any outside service.
  • A large plugin library and a long-running forum, which matters when you are stuck at midnight.
  • Bubble AI and, in beta, an import tool that converts a codebase from Lovable, v0, Base44, Replit or Claude into a Bubble app.

Workload units, and how the bill grows

Bubble measures the server work your app does in workload units (WU). Its FAQ describes workload as the server resources needed to host, run and scale your app, so page loads, database searches, workflows and API calls all add to it. Each plan includes a monthly allowance. Beyond it you can buy a higher workload tier or pay overages as you go, and you can switch overages off. Bubble emails you at 75% and 100% of your allowance. Free and Agency plans cannot use tiers or overages at all.

  • Free, $0: 50,000 WU a month, 1 app editor, a development version only, the native mobile editor and on-device testing.
  • Starter, $59 a month: 175,000 WU, 3 live app versions, 5 mobile build submissions a month.
  • Growth, $209 a month: 250,000 WU, 2 editors, 5 live versions, 10 mobile builds.
  • Team, $549 a month: 500,000 WU, 5 editors, 8 live versions, 20 mobile builds.
  • Enterprise: custom workload, versions and builds.

The selector on the pricing page also offers Web-only and Mobile-only plans, which cost less if you need just one, and annual billing saves up to 20%. The practical advice: inefficient searches are what burn WU, so learn Bubble's workload dashboard in your first month, before real traffic arrives, and keep overages off until you understand your baseline.

The lock-in question

This is Bubble's oldest criticism and it still stands. There is no source code export. You can export your database records as CSV and reach data through Bubble's Data API, but the pages, workflows and privacy rules only run on Bubble. If you ever leave, you rebuild. There is an irony here: Bubble's new import tool will happily take a codebase from another builder, but there is no matching way to take one back out.

Whether that matters depends on your plans. For an internal tool or a business you intend to run on Bubble for years, lock-in is a known trade for speed. For a startup that may raise money or hire engineers, it is a risk worth pricing in now. Our Bubble alternatives guide covers what moving off actually involves.

The native mobile builder

Bubble now builds native iOS and Android apps from the same platform, sharing one database and backend with your web app. Even the Free plan includes the native mobile editor, the mobile debugger and on-device testing, and paid plans include a monthly allowance of build submissions to the stores, from 5 on Starter to 20 on Team. You still need your own Apple Developer Program membership ($99 a year) and Google Play account ($25 once).

The mobile editor is newer than the web one, and native apps follow different layout rules, so expect to design mobile screens separately rather than reuse web pages. If a store app is the main goal rather than an add-on to a web product, compare it with a mobile-first builder; see our FlutterFlow review.

Questions readers ask before committing

Can I build an MVP on the Free plan?

You can build it, not launch it. Free has a development version only, so real users and a custom domain need Starter or higher.

Is Bubble faster than an AI builder?

For the first version, no. A chat-based builder gets a working screen on day one. Bubble tends to win later, on apps with many roles and rules, because you control every piece.

What if I want the code?

Then Bubble is the wrong pick. VibeDream is one alternative that writes real code: a React front end with a FastAPI backend in Python, built from a chat, which you can download as a ZIP or sync to GitHub. Hosting is included and each publish costs 5 credits. Its built-in login and database work with one tap. It is fair to say what it lacks next to Bubble: its one-tap payments are coming soon, it builds web apps rather than native store apps, and there is no free plan. Plans start at $49 a month for 60 credits.

Who should choose Bubble?

  • Founders building a complex web product who will put in the learning weeks and accept lock-in.
  • Teams that want one platform for a web app and companion native apps sharing a database.
  • Not someone who needs a working app this week, or who must own the source. For a simpler data app, see the Softr review.
