Base44 vs Cursor

An honest comparison to help you choose the right tool for your project.

About Base44 and Cursor

Base44 is a no-code AI platform that builds a full app from a description, with backend, database, login, analytics and hosting included. Cursor is a coding agent with an IDE, desktop app, CLI and cloud agents that works on your own repositories; it writes and reviews code, and you deploy the app wherever you choose.

Feature Comparison

VibeDream.ai

  • No setup, like Base44, but every React + FastAPI file is readable in the Code tab
  • GitHub sync on both plans, so a project can move into Cursor when you are ready
  • Hosting, a vibedreams.ai address and your own domain included, which Cursor leaves to you
  • Makes Phaser games as well as apps

Base44 and Cursor

  • Base44: GitHub integration is listed from the Builder plan, $40 a month billed yearly
  • Base44: the backend runs on Base44's own infrastructure
  • Cursor: no app hosting and no managed backend for the apps you build
  • Cursor: the $8 Plus plan uses Grok models only, and third-party models on higher plans are billed at API list price

The Verdict

Most people who search Base44 vs Cursor should pick Base44. If you cannot yet deploy an app on your own, Cursor's power goes into setup rather than your idea, and Base44 gives you login, data and hosting on day one. The exception is a developer, or someone set on becoming one, with a project that needs a specific framework, an existing codebase or custom hosting. For that person Cursor is the better tool by a wide margin.

These two are not really rivals

Base44 vs Cursor compares two different kinds of tool, and for most readers the answer is Base44. Base44 is a no-code builder: you describe an app and it builds the screens, the database, login and hosting. Cursor is a coding agent: it works inside a codebase, writing and reviewing code, and you decide how the app is built and where it runs. If you are not a developer and want a working tool this week, pick Base44. If you are a developer, pick Cursor.

Checked Oct 2026. Base44 figures come from base44.com/pricing, which shows yearly billing. Cursor figures come from cursor.com/pricing, where plans are now sold together with Grok and X features.

App people and codebase people

Base44 is for people who think in terms of the app, not the code. Its FAQ says you describe what you need in plain language and it builds the full thing: front end, back end, database, user login and payments. It connects to tools such as Gmail, Slack, Notion, Google Drive, HubSpot and Salesforce, which makes it a good fit for internal tools.

Cursor is for people who think in terms of the codebase. It runs as an editor and desktop app, in the terminal and as cloud agents that build and test features for you to review. You bring the repository, the framework and the hosting.

A client feedback tool, built twice

Imagine a client feedback tool for a design studio: clients sign in, upload files, leave comments on each version and get an email when a new version is ready.

In Base44 you describe that, get a working version with login and storage, refine it by chat, connect email through an integration, and publish it on a domain. You never pick a framework.

In Cursor you start with a folder or a template. You ask the agent to scaffold the app, pick a framework, set up auth and storage with providers you choose, write the email step and the tests. Then you deploy it to a host. You get full control of every line, and a lot more decisions.

If you want to measure it, time both from blank screen to a working login and upload. The gap tells you whether the extra control is worth it for this project.

Backend, hosting and domains

Base44 includes an integrated backend and database, login and user management, analytics and cloud storage on every plan. Paid plans include connecting a domain, plus a domain included for the first year. Hosting is part of the platform.

Cursor includes none of that, by design. Its plans pay for the agent and its model usage. Serving your app to visitors happens on a host you pick, with a database and an auth provider you pick, each with its own bill.

Cursor's new Grok plans, and Base44's credits

Base44, billed yearly:

  • Free: $0, 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, up to 5 apps.
  • Starter: $16 a month, 100 message credits, 2,000 integration credits, connect a domain.
  • Builder: $40 a month, 250 message credits, 10,000 integration credits, GitHub integration, model selection.
  • Pro: $80 a month, 500 message credits. Elite: $160 a month, 1,200 message credits.

Cursor:

  • Free: limited agent and chat requests.
  • Plus: $8 a month, shared usage pool, Grok models only.
  • Premium: $30 a month, four times the Plus usage, cloud agents, third-party models at API list price.
  • Super: $100 a month. Ultra: $200 a month.

The October 2026 change matters here. Cursor Plus at $8 only uses Grok models. If you want Claude or GPT, you need Premium or higher, and those models are billed separately at API list price on top of the plan. Base44's credits cover AI messages and integration actions, and Base44 notes that exact use depends on the action and the model.

Code ownership

Base44's FAQ says you own your code, data and users, and that two-way GitHub sync exports the full source to your own repository. On the pricing page, GitHub integration appears from Builder up.

With Cursor the code was always yours, because it lives in your repository from the first line. If owning and moving the code is the top priority, Cursor wins outright.

The $8 versus $16 trap

The most common mistake is picking Cursor because it sounds more powerful, then stalling on setup. Power only helps if you can use it. If you have never deployed an app, the first week in Cursor is mostly about frameworks, environment variables and hosting, not your idea.

The opposite mistake is picking Base44 for a project that will clearly outgrow a no-code platform, such as a product with unusual data processing, a heavy custom algorithm or strict hosting requirements. You can export through GitHub on Builder and above, but rebuilding the backend later costs more than starting in code.

The trap is comparing $8 with $16. Base44's price covers building, integrations and hosting. Cursor's covers the agent; hosting, a database and any non-Grok model use are separate bills. Add those up before deciding Cursor is the cheaper of the two.

A rule that works: if you can describe the app as screens, forms and lists, start without code. If you describe it as algorithms, services and data pipelines, start in code. If you are not sure, build the smallest useful version in a no-code tool first; it shows you what the app really needs.

Who should ignore our advice

Pick Cursor even as a beginner if your real goal is to learn programming rather than to ship this particular app, since reading the agent's code is a good teacher. Pick Cursor if the project already exists as a codebase, or must run on a specific host. Everyone else building a first internal tool or small customer app will get further on Base44.

A builder that hands you the code

VibeDream starts like Base44 and stays open like Cursor. You describe what you want by typing, recording a voice note or attaching a screenshot, and a live preview appears in seconds. Apps are React + FastAPI and games are Phaser. Every file is in the Code tab, and you can export a ZIP or sync to GitHub from the top of the project, then open the repository in Cursor when you want hands-on control.

Hosting is built in. Press Put it online, pick a vibedreams.ai name and it is live in a few minutes with HTTPS, at 5 credits per update. Your own domain takes a TXT and a CNAME record, shown in the deployment guide. For keys an app needs, see API keys and settings.

The limits: VibeDream's one-tap payments are coming soon. There is no free plan, and plans start at $49 a month on the pricing page. The Blank Starter template shows the React and FastAPI starting point.
