Comparison

Replit vs Claude Code

An honest comparison to help you choose the right tool for your project.

About Replit and Claude Code

Replit is a cloud development environment whose Agent writes, runs and deploys code in many languages on Replit's machines. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool: it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with git, and it runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and on the web.

  • No workspace or terminal at all: chat, voice note or screenshot, then a live preview
  • Hosting and your own domain in the plan, unlike Claude Code
  • React + FastAPI code you can sync to GitHub and keep working on with Claude Code
  • Makes Phaser games as well as web apps

Replit and Claude Code

  • Replit: publishing is billed by deployment type in its docs, and the pricing page lists no free plan
  • Replit: projects live in Replit's workspace rather than on your own machine
  • Claude Code: it does not host apps; you deploy to a provider you choose
  • Claude Code: the free Claude plan does not include it; access starts with Pro at $20 a month

The Verdict

Stop asking which agent is smarter; both are strong enough for most projects. Ask where you want the project to live. If the answer is "somewhere I do not have to think about", rent Replit's workspace and deploy from the same tab. If it is "in my own repository, next to my tests and pull requests", use Claude Code and bring your own host. At $20 each to start, the price is not the deciding factor.

Where should the project live

Replit vs Claude Code is a choice between renting a workspace and bringing an agent to your own code. Pick Replit if you want one browser tab where the Agent writes the app on Replit's machines, runs it and deploys it, with nothing to install. Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that works where you already are, in your terminal, editor, a desktop app or the browser, on your own repositories with git, tests and pull requests. Both start at $20 a month.

Five differences in one list

  • What it is. Replit: a cloud development environment with an AI agent. Claude Code: an agentic coding tool from Anthropic.
  • Where it runs. Replit: in your browser, on Replit's machines. Claude Code: terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app, and the web at claude.ai/code.
  • Hosting. Replit: built in. Claude Code: none; deploy wherever you like.
  • Price to start. Replit Core: $20 a month, or $18 billed yearly. Claude Pro, which includes Claude Code: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly at $200.
  • Heavier use. Replit Pro: $100 a month. Claude Max: from $100 a month, billed monthly.

A studio that is set up, or a colleague at your desk

Replit feels like a studio that is already set up. You describe the app, the Agent picks a stack, installs what it needs and starts it. When you want to look under the hood, the editor and shell are one click away. For a first project that is a gentle way in.

Claude Code feels like a colleague who is good at the keyboard. Anthropic's docs describe it reading your codebase, planning an approach, writing code across several files and checking that it works. It stages changes, writes commit messages and opens pull requests. It connects to other tools through MCP, can run on a schedule, and can split a task across several agents. You can start a long task on the web and pull it into your terminal later. That is a lot of power, and it assumes you are comfortable with a project folder and git.

To see the difference for yourself, give both the same prompt: a small inventory app for a shop with login, a product list, stock counts that drop when an order is logged and a low-stock alert. On Replit you can judge it in the preview and deploy it. With Claude Code you will also decide on the framework, database and host.

Databases on each

Neither one forces a backend on you. Replit's Agent sets up databases inside the workspace, and the Pro plan adds database rollback of up to 28 days. Claude Code writes whatever backend you ask for, such as FastAPI with Postgres or a Node API with SQLite, and you choose where the database lives and hold the keys.

Payments work the same way on both: the agent writes the payment integration and you connect your own provider account.

Deploying from the tab or from your terminal

Replit's docs describe autoscale deployments billed on compute units and requests, static deployments that only bill outbound data beyond an allowance, and reserved machines. A custom domain points at a published app with an A record and a TXT record that Replit generates.

Claude Code has no hosting. It will help you write deployment config for a host such as Vercel, Fly or your own server, and the hosting bill comes from that provider.

$20 on each, and what is extra

Replit Core at $20 includes $20 toward more powerful models and up to 30 hours of chat on Free Mode. Pro at $100 includes $100 toward the most powerful models, ten parallel agents and up to 15 collaborators. Publishing is extra and depends on the deployment type.

Claude Code comes with a Claude subscription. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month on the $200 yearly plan. Max starts at $100 a month for much more usage. The Free Claude plan does not include Claude Code. Claude Code can also run on an Anthropic Console account billed by usage. Hosting is a separate bill.

For a small project built over a few evenings, either entry tier is usually enough to get started. Heavy daily agent use is where the higher tiers come in.

Six projects, sorted

  • Your first web app, with no development setup on your computer. Replit, because the workspace and hosting are ready.
  • A change to an existing product your team already ships. Claude Code, because it works in your repository, runs your tests and opens a pull request.
  • A long, boring task such as upgrading dependencies, adding tests or fixing lint errors across a codebase. Claude Code, which Anthropic built for exactly that kind of work.
  • A hackathon project you want online tonight. Replit, since build and deploy sit in the same tab.
  • An internal script that pipes logs or data through an AI step. Claude Code, which can run in scripts and CI.
  • A small app or game for friends, with no wish to touch code. Neither. A chat builder is quicker.

The two also mix. Some developers prototype in Replit, push to GitHub, then keep going locally with Claude Code once the project gets serious. Others do the reverse: write the core in Claude Code, then import the repository into Replit when they want a quick hosted demo to share with a link.

When the usual advice is wrong

The usual advice says beginners take Replit and developers take Claude Code. Two exceptions are worth knowing. A beginner who wants to learn real development habits can do well with Claude Code on the web at claude.ai/code, which needs no local setup and teaches git from day one. And a developer who needs a demo running on a link tonight is often faster on Replit, even with a good local setup, because build and hosting sit together.

If you never want to see code

If you do not plan to work with code at all, both tools can be more than you need. VibeDream is a chat-first builder. You describe what you want by typing, recording a voice note or attaching a screenshot, and a live preview appears in seconds. Apps are React + FastAPI and games are Phaser. The code is always there in the Code tab, and you can sync it to GitHub and keep working with Claude Code later.

Going live is one screen: press Put it online, pick a vibedreams.ai name, and it is live in a few minutes with HTTPS, at 5 credits per update. Your own domain needs a TXT and a CNAME record, explained in the deployment guide. New to the idea? Read what vibe coding is.

The limits: VibeDream builds web apps and games, not general scripts or services. Built-in login and database are live, and one-tap payments are coming soon. Plans start at $49 a month and there is no free plan; see pricing.
