Is Wix a good website builder? What year one really costs, and how its AI builds

Is Wix a good website builder? Yes, for most small businesses, as long as you pick the plan by the features you need rather than by the lowest price. The catch is that the cheapest paid plan, Light at $17.77 a month billed yearly, does not take payments or bookings. A business that sells or schedules anything starts at Core, $29.77 a month, and most end up on Business at $39.77. In return you get a mature editor, an AI builder you can talk to, hosting, and business tools that work on day one. What you do not get is a site you can move: Wix sites live on Wix.

Prices below are from wix.com/plans in US dollars on yearly billing, checked Oct 2026. Wix shows local prices and adds tax in some regions, so your screen may differ. We have not run a timed build.

What a small business site costs in year one

Wix bills its yearly plans in full at purchase. Here is what each plan comes to over twelve months, and the feature that usually decides between them.

  • Light: $17.77 a month, about $213 for the year. 2 GB storage, 2 collaborators, a light marketing suite. No payments or scheduling. Fine for a portfolio, a menu or a brochure site.
  • Core: $29.77 a month, about $357 for the year. 50 GB, 5 collaborators, basic ecommerce, accepting payments, scheduling and services. The real starting point for a salon, a tutor or a small shop.
  • Business: $39.77 a month, about $477 for the year. 100 GB, 10 collaborators, standard ecommerce. Wix marks it as recommended, and it is where growing shops land.
  • Business Elite: $159.77 a month, about $1,917 for the year. Unlimited storage, 100 collaborators, advanced ecommerce and an advanced developer platform.

All four include a domain for the first year, with conditions worth reading. The voucher applies to a first premium purchase only, must be redeemed within 60 days, and covers a new domain bought through Wix, not one you already own. Year two adds the domain renewal at the normal rate. Apps from the Wix App Market can carry their own monthly fees on top, so add those before you compare Wix with anything else.

A worked example: a yoga studio that wants class bookings and card payments needs at least Core. Year one is about $357 with the domain included. Year two is the same plan price plus domain renewal. That is a fair price for hosting, booking and payments in one account, and more than a bare site on a cheaper builder, which would then need a separate booking tool.

The Free plan, honestly

Wix has a Free plan that needs no card and includes hosting, the drag and drop editor, templates and AI creation tools. Its limits are the ones that matter to a business: you cannot connect your own domain, and Wix's own FAQ lists removing Wix branding as a premium feature. Use Free to build and test the whole site, then upgrade on the day you launch. All premium plans have a 14-day money-back window from the first upgrade.

How the Wix AI website builder actually works

Wix launched Wix Harmony, its current AI website builder, on January 21, 2026. You start by describing your business and goals in your own words rather than answering fixed questions. Harmony generates the site structure, pages, layout and copy, and adds features suited to the industry, such as booking or payments.

After that you work with Aria, Wix's AI agent, which understands the whole site. You can ask for a new color scheme, a redesigned page or a store section, and Wix says Aria works within its existing architecture, so a change in one place does not break another. That is Wix's claim and we have not tested it. What is clearly useful is that you can switch between prompting Aria and editing by hand in the drag and drop editor whenever you like, so you never fight the AI over spacing on a button.

Two habits get better results. Put real detail into the first prompt (services, prices, opening hours, area served), because the first draft sets the structure. Then use Aria for broad changes and the editor for precise ones.

Where Wix wins

  • Business features without plugins. Payments, scheduling and stores are built in from Core up and work together.
  • An AI builder that hands over cleanly to a full visual editor, so non-designers and designers can both finish the job.
  • A very large template library and App Market.
  • Hosting, security and updates handled for you, with no server or plugin maintenance.
  • Teams. Collaborator seats scale from 2 to 100 across plans.

Where Wix loses

  • Portability. You can take your text and images, but not the site as code. If you leave, you rebuild.
  • The price ladder. The cheapest plan rarely fits a business that sells or books anything, so the honest entry price is Core.
  • Custom logic. Wix is excellent at the features it ships. If your idea needs logic Wix has not built, such as a custom quote calculator with your own rules or an internal tool, you are fighting the platform.
  • Design control. Designers who want precise layout and animation usually prefer Framer. Our Framer review covers that trade.

The Base44 angle

Wix announced on June 18, 2025 that it had acquired Base44, an AI app builder, for about $80 million up front plus earn-out payments through 2029 tied to performance. Base44 still runs as its own product and business unit, and you can buy a domain for a Base44 app through Wix.

For Wix users, this fills the custom-logic gap above with a sister product rather than a feature. If you need a website, use Wix. If you need an app, such as a client tracker, an order dashboard or an internal tool with logins, Base44 is Wix's answer, and it is quick at that job. Our Base44 review covers who it suits and its main limit, which is that its code expects Base44's backend to run.

When VibeDream is the better fit

We make VibeDream, so take this as one option among several. VibeDream is not a Wix replacement for a classic business site with bookings and a shop. Wix has those features ready. VibeDream's built-in login and database work with one tap, and its one-tap payments are coming soon.

It fits when the site needs something Wix does not ship. You describe it in a chat, by voice note or with a screenshot, and VibeDream builds a React app with a FastAPI backend in Python that you can read in the code editor. You can download the project as a ZIP or sync it to GitHub and host it anywhere. Publishing costs 5 credits each time, with hosting and a your-app.vibedreams.ai address included, and your own domain connects with a TXT and a CNAME record on a www or subdomain address. Plans start at $49 a month for 60 credits, with no free plan, so it costs more than Wix Light and you should only pay for it if you need custom features. A good place to start is the Aesthetic Landing Page template.

Pick Wix if, pick something else if

  • Pick Wix if you run a service business or a small shop and want bookings, payments and a site in one account. Budget for Core or Business.
  • Pick Framer if design control and animation matter more than built-in business tools.
  • Pick Durable if you want the fastest possible one-page presence and little else. See our Durable review.
  • Pick Base44 if what you need is an internal app, not a website.
  • Pick VibeDream if the site needs custom logic and you want to own the code.
